Nothing is more alien to the present age than idleness.

“Nothing is more alien to the present age than idleness. If we think of resting from our labours, it is only in order to return to them. In thinking so highly of work we are aberrant. Few other cultures have ever done so. For nearly all of history and all prehistory, work was an indignity.”
— John Gray, Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals

I am in several minds about this – but it is certainly thought provoking :)

  1. It is. Though I generally concur with John Gray.
I think a little honest work is good for the soul, then one can relax with a clear conscience.

Works for me, see latest post.
I am now on terrace, shattered, with glass of dry Muscat and seriously considering some ice cream…..

Thank you for your comments. They are really appreciated 😊

I do agree too, a little honest work is good. It is when it becomes a driving force, and obsession even, then I am with John Gray. I confess I do like Gray. Largely because he makes me think. He writes so compellingly, and yet is so pessimistic. And I do so like to be an optimist!

I am now in my study, tired, with a glass of ale and seriously considering a bourbon… 😉
